What's new in Caret

Every update to the Mac app. It updates itself; or download the latest.

0.3.9 (204)

A Finder-like Drive, terminal tabs, and apps that work

Drive looks and works like Finder, the Terminal has tabs, every app sits in a clean window, apps your bots build open reliably and keep shared data, and voice only reads the conversation you have open.

  • Drive, like Finder. Folders and files with proper icons, list and icon views, sortable columns, search and Quick Look with Space.
  • Terminal tabs. Open several shells side by side with + or ⌘T, and switch with ⌘1–9.
  • Cleaner windows. Every app sits in a rounded card under its title bar. Green fills the panel, and the arrows button opens the app in its own window. The Dock has new icons.
  • Apps your bots build, working. Apps open reliably on every computer, keep data everyone shares, and show what went wrong instead of a blank page. Bots check their apps before saying they're ready.
  • Voice, where you are. Replies are read aloud only from the conversation you have open, and a Speaking button in the header stops it.
  • Quieter headers. A bot's status is a coloured dot, and the computer picker is simpler.
  • Memory that keeps up. Bots' shared memory reaches every computer again, however large it grows.
0.3.8 (203)

A desktop for your bots' computer, and notifications that matter

The right panel is now a small desktop with a Dock and windows, notifications only come for what concerns you and open right at the message, and files you attach reach bots straight away.

  • A desktop in the side panel. Drive, the Browser, the Terminal and the apps your bots build each open in their own window, with a Dock at the bottom and an Apps view to find everything. Move and resize windows, or pop one out into its own window.
  • A real file manager, browser and terminal. Drive has a path bar, search and sortable columns; the Browser has tabs and an address bar, shaped to the page; the Terminal looks like one.
  • Notifications that matter. You're notified for mentions, DMs, replies to you, threads you're in, approvals, failed runs and being added somewhere, and you can switch each off in Settings › Notifications. Background chores like memory tidying no longer notify.
  • Land right on it. Clicking a notification opens the exact message, approval or failure, and highlights it.
  • Attachments reach bots straight away. A bot no longer starts on your message before the file you attached is on its computer.
  • Polish. Softer grey message bubbles in the Caret theme, no rings around bots' faces, and every unread count lines up in the sidebar.
0.3.7 (201)

Unread counts you can trust, and real DMs

Counts now show unread messages and clear when you open them, a New line marks where you left off, bot DMs work like DMs, and threads in spaces show their replies at a glance.

  • Unread counts. Bots, spaces and threads show how many messages you haven't read, and the count clears as soon as you open them. Questions and approvals no longer add to it.
  • A New line. Opening a conversation marks the first message you haven't seen, so you know where you left off.
  • Real DMs. A bot's DM shows just the bot at the top, and only that bot answers there. Mentioning another bot in a DM no longer wakes it.
  • Threads at a glance. In a space, each message with a thread shows who replied, how many replies, how many are new, and whether a bot is replying now. Click it to open the thread.
  • Quieter sidebar. Spaces with nothing new step back, and sorting lives in each section's menu.
0.3.6 (200)

Hear your bots, and talk to them

Bots' replies can be read aloud and you can dictate messages, all on your Mac; bot unread counts clear when you open them, and everyone watching a bot's browser gets their own view.

  • Read replies aloud. Turn it on in Settings › Voice and bots' replies are spoken as they arrive, in a natural voice you pick, at the speed you like. Press Esc to stop.
  • Listen to any message. Hover a message and click the speaker to hear it.
  • Dictation. Click the microphone beside Send, or press ⇧⌘M, and your words appear in the message box as you speak.
  • Private by design. Voice runs entirely on your Mac. It's a one-time download in Settings, and what you say never leaves your Mac.
  • Unread counts that clear. Opening a bot now clears its count, including mentions and replies from before you cleared its history.
  • Your own browser view. Everyone watching a bot's browser sees it at a fixed size that fits their own window, so resizing yours no longer changes it for anyone else.
0.3.5 (199)

See what needs you, and where bots are working

The sidebar shows what needs you and where bots are working, keeps busy bots on top, and stays smooth with many bots at work; switching a bot's subscription takes effect on its next turn.

  • What needs you. Spaces and threads show a count when something needs you (an approval, a question, a mention or a reply), a quiet dot when there's just something new, and nothing otherwise.
  • Where bots are working. Threads say "working", spaces show the faces of the bots at work in them, and each bot says where it's working.
  • Busy bots on top. Bots that worked in the last two hours or have a message waiting stay at the top; the rest move below your spaces.
  • Tidier spaces. An open space shows up to five threads, then More. Sort bots and spaces A–Z, by recent activity, or drag them into your own order.
  • Smooth with many bots. The app stays responsive when lots of bots are working at once.
  • Subscriptions switch cleanly. Moving a bot to another AI subscription takes effect on its next turn, without cutting off what it's doing.
  • Double-click to zoom. Double-clicking the top of the window zooms it reliably.
  • Privacy. The Files panel shows only what you're allowed to see, and only you can put bots on your own Mac.
0.3.5 (196)

Notifications you can hear, and a fresh start with a bot

Notifications read like Slack's and come with a sound you choose; clear a bot's DM history to start fresh; links open the app.

  • Notifications you notice. Every message in a DM notifies, titled with who sent it, in plain text, with a sound. Pick Knock, Pop, Ding or Tock in Settings › General.
  • Clear history. In a bot's menu, Clear history starts a fresh conversation and a new session; the old one stays under Earlier conversation.
  • ⋯ in the header. The bot's, thread's or space's options, one click away.
  • Links open Caret. Opening a Caret link now opens the app at the thread, even when Caret wasn't running.
  • Bots post in your private channels. A bot you ask can post in private spaces you're in.
  • Clearer Pause, and space members. Pause says what it does; Members in a space's menu shows that space's members.
0.3.5 (195)

Faster and smoother

The sidebar and threads draw only what's on screen, and bots' faces no longer keep the app busy, so scrolling and typing stay smooth.

  • A faster sidebar. Only the rows you can see are drawn, however many threads you have.
  • Calmer faces. Faces in lists move only while their bot is working, and nothing animates while Caret is in the background, so the app no longer redraws all the time.
  • Lighter threads. Long threads with busy bots update in small batches instead of redrawing on every step.
0.3.5 (194)

Bots share the browser, @here, and your time format

Bots each get their own browser tab and work side by side, @here calls every bot in a space, a 12- or 24-hour time format, and an update card that says what's new.

  • Bots share the browser. Each bot works in a tab of its own, so several can browse at once without getting in each other's way.
  • @here. Tag @here to call every bot in the space or channel at once.
  • Shorter, cleaner replies. Bots lead with the answer and keep chat replies short, putting long detail in a file. Links read properly in Caret and in Slack.
  • 12-hour or 24-hour. Settings › Workspace has a time format. Every time in the app follows it, and bots write times that way too, without tacking on a time zone.
  • Updates in the sidebar. When a new version is ready, a card at the bottom of the sidebar says so, with a line on what it brings and an Update button.
  • Release notes. The update window now shows what changed, and every release is on caretbot.com/releases.
  • Still faces. Settings › Appearance can stop bots' faces blinking and looking about while they're idle; they still move while they work.
0.3.5 (193)

Bots that work together, and answer when asked

Bots answer more reliably, several bots in one thread read in order, per-bot admins, your own Slack channels, and a steadier web app.

  • Bots answer when they're meant to. Follow-ups to the bot you're talking with, and plain asks where two bots could help, now reach a bot instead of going unanswered.
  • Bots working together. Each bot at work has its own live row; its work, files and schedules land in its own message, in order. When bots hand work to each other, a small relay shows who has it.
  • Per-bot admins. Make any member an admin of a bot from its People tab; they can change it as its owner does.
  • Your integrations, any bot you use. Attach your own connected apps and saved credentials to any bot you're allowed to use.
  • Your own Slack channels. Nothing from Slack shows up until you mirror it; each person keeps their own list of mirrored channels.
  • Posting to Slack. Ask a bot to post in "this channel" and it does, and it tells you whether the message reached Slack.
  • Vault. Cleaner rows: name and kind, the bots that use it, and where it signs in.
  • This Mac is yours to add. Signing in no longer connects your Mac as a computer; add it from Settings › Computers when you want bots to use it.
  • Screen permissions. macOS now asks on behalf of "Caret Computer", notices when you allow it, and the Screen view can ask again.
